This surfer is busy gathering ideas for a business in Yogyakarta with his wife and is also a photography student there. He is also a member of hardcore band Anti-Spite but all this activity doesn’t interfere with his surfing time. “Up until now surfing is fine because I do a lot of trips to
tourist areas which also have surfing spots. I try to work my study schedule around surfing…sometimes it’s hard…if the swell’s good sometimes I can’t just drop everything….hahahahaha… try and see if I can do it?? Sometimes one has to lose, sometimes study, sometimes surfing trips” he explained.
Edo is the fifth of seven children in his business oriented family. He came to surfing when he was a frustrated teenager. “I learned to surf with my friend Ajoe Borie. One Friday morning I borrowed a surfboard and went to the beach with Ajoe…after I listened to his instructions about how to paddle and take off I was I the water all day feeling like I was sleeping on the surfboard. The thing is that I can’t swim …in the beginning I was scared of drowning but my solution for that was to always use a legrope. So every time I fell I would quickly grab the legrope so my board was always close to me…hahahaha…finally I felt comfortable in the water…”
For 10 straight days Ajoe lent him a board and Edo, who is a fan of Rob Machado, happily followed all his instructions. “Surfing is definitely a positive thing to do” he said. With hard work, Edo who wanted to be a soldier when he was small and has a wife from outside Asia, succeeded in mastering the waves. “I was so happy, at night I even dreamed I was riding big waves…hahahaha”
Although he wanted to stop surfing because his parents forbade him to surf and his other friends made fun of him but his friend Ajoe’s support helped him stick to it. “Not all guys can surf. Only the bravest can surf and stick with it.”
Edo is the coordinator of the Pariaman Surfer Family (PSF). “Pariaman Surfer Family was formally registered 2 years ago. In 2003 we only had 10 members and so we weren’t ready to form a surfing community in Pariaman. In 2005 surfing started to develop and we had 35 members. We often go on surfing trips together. The tourism authority provided facilities for the PSF at Gandoriah beach where we hang out together. On 2nd August 2009 PSF had our first contest headed by Mukmin and supporting Bang Hari SUBSTANCE with support from the Pariaman local government and this year we are planning our second contest. Keep going Pariaman …. “
Well, okay bro…thanks for the chit-chat…keep rockin’ the waves dude!!!
