Who doesn't know this guy? He is well known to many people because of his involvement in the music industry. He also gives a lot of messages to the public. Yeah...he is Jerink (drummer SID), well known 'bad boy' and environmental activist. So how did he end up surfing now? What does he get from surfing? Check this interview with Jerinx…

Hello, how are you?
I’m great! I just changed a tyre on my Impala 62, because the tyre blew up last night!!

Tell us about how you started surfing?
When I was in high school I tried surfing for about 3 months. But when I got hooked on music I stopped surfing. I thought that everyone in Kuta was already champion surfers and it was better for me to fulfill my dream to become a musician and bad boy ha ha ha. In the middle of 2008 I tried surfing again because when you play music for a long time your brain can get stuck sometimes. With surfing I get to balance my thoughts and build my stamina so I can play the drums hard…ha ha

Why did you choose surfing and not another sport?
Because basically I don’t like sport. And surfing doesn’t feel like a real sport. It’s just playing around with waves, enjoying the sunset and bikini girls..it’s fun.
I tried skateboarding but it’s too risky because any injuries would affect parts of my body I need for playing music. Surfing is a bit safer from a fatal accident (but that really depends on where you surf).

Where do you usually surf?
Mostly Kuta area. Half Way, Maharani in front of  Mc D and at Padma.

Have you had a wipeout? Tell us about it or any other injuries…
I wipeout quite often. The worst was when my board hit my head and blood came out of my ear …I couldn’t hear for a week ha ha ha

What makes you want to be a free surfer?
Free Surfer = Surfer Gratis? Ha ha ha. Because a free surfer doesn’t have to go in contests, if I went in a contest I would lose for sure! Ha ha.... But a beer drinking competition...come on...ha ha ha

You’re also a drummer (SID), does surfing interfere with that?
Surfing really helps because my body is more fit and flexible. My drumming is smooth and I don’t get tired quickly ( It’s like an ad for strength medicine!! Ha ha)

What do you think of surfer girls?
Surfer girls are cool, they’ve got attitude and are mostly gutsy. They are smart not to become victims of the advertising campaign for white skin that has poisoned the minds of so many Indonesian teenagers.

What do you think of surfing in Bali ?
Surfing is Bali, Bali is Surfing.

Have you been on any trips ?
Not to o far yet, just in Bali. My fartherest surf trip was to Medewi, Negara. When we were leaving I wrecked my feet on the sharp stones at Medewi Beach...ouch!!

Have you ever got special treatment because people know you are a surfer or Jerinx from SID?
Ha ha ha what do you mean ‘special treatment’? Get given all the good waves or not get dropped in on? Not yet…ha ha ha. Everything's just normal…everyone’s relaxed.

Any plans for a surfing related project or collaboration between SID and surfing?
Already…. A few SID songs are on some surfing videos both local and international.

Which surfer has influenced you the most?
clearly not  Betet and Tut Sampi, they’re too crazy!! Ha ha ha…..

Plans for 2009?
I want to learn to swim and become a surfing champion while playing chess....ha ha. Seriously, I just wanna be a better surfer, musician and a much better person.

What do you still want to do in surfing?
Put a picture of a Harley on a surfboard.

If you weren’t a musician what would you be doing?
Designer, actor or a stove and liquid soap salesman so all the ladies would love me…. Ha ha ha...What do you think about tattoos and surfing?
A bit contradictive because tattoos can fade if they are in the direct sun for too long…I avoid surfing in the afternoon, but what the hell.
