Dadi Wahyudin was the first winner of the photography contest in Night Surf event on December 2009. But recently, this winner rarely takes pictures and concentrates more on painting. Below is the conversation between MW and Dadi…
How long actually have you been in photography?
It started for about 4 years ago when I first worked in Odysseys as a photographer. There, I was specialized in photography. Before working in Odysseys, I had already worked with Michael, but then there was a long pace before we met again and I joined Odysseys. I only lasted for 1 ½ years there.
Do you enjoy being a photographer?
I enjoy my job now more. I used to take pictures in the water using Olympus. But now, I do it from the beach so I can get much more pictures.
How could you finally enter the world of painting?
I took civil engineering in college, so I have the drawing skill. At first, it was because I met Michael’s friend who wanted to open a painting gallery. We talked and finally I work there.
So, you don’t do those photography things no more?
I still do it. Whenever there is a Bali traditional ceremony or anything like it, I’ll go. Because the results can be used as inspirations in painting. I like taking pictures and then paint them. The moment is more real through pictures. Fortunately, I’m not a realist but an abstract figurative painter.
For you, is it better to be a photographer or a painter?
It’s actually the same. Because both of them are art. It’s just the opportunity coming to me right now is from the painting.
How long does it usually take to finish a painting?
It takes quite a long time for the big one. For 1 ½ X 2 meters, I usually finish it in a week or more. For the small one, 3 days is enough.
Wow.. kinda long time.. maybe photography is better..
But the money we got from photos and paintings is also different.. hehehe..
Anyway, do you surf?
Yes, I learned using longboard before started taking surfing photos, so that I knew about the timing and moment.
How did it feel when you won the surfing photography contest, while actually you seldom do it?
It was a surprise, moreover I took the moving object at night. The truth was, I didn’t feel confident. I even almost didn’t submit my photoworks. I saw the competitors using great lenses. I thought it was a very small chance for me to win, hehehe..
So that you won, what’s the money for?
To buy my wedding ring, hahaha.. I’ll get married in Palembang next month.
Seriously?? Congrats, then! Consider this as a gift from Magic Wave.
Hahahahaha.. thank you..
Last words for Magic Wave and the readers..
For Magic Wave.. don’t stop making events.. for the readers, keep on fighting, because results always come from the process we do (how wise!)
