Mardenis Ijmal

This tall surfer and body boarder started surfing in 2003 at Padang. Along with two of his friends he surfs around the spots in west Sumatra, even though there are several prohibitions from the local population on surfing they still practice their extreme sport. When Emal was stuck while writing his thesis, surfing was one of the things that helped refresh his mind.

Emal is an civil engineering student at Padang Institute of Technology and has had a bad experience at Mentawai when he had a big wipeout, but that experience didn’t stop him from body boarding. Emal loves travelling and was very excited when telling us about the great waves and environment in the Riau Islands and around Sumatra Barat. As we talked the time passed and it was soon 5.30pm and Emal left to play volley ball on Kuta Beach.
