“For all surfers now, don’t be too proud because there’s always someone better than you”

OCCUPATION

Kina or Mr BALI SAIKOU has been a surf guide for 10 years and also owns Marin Work on Nusa Lembongan and Ulu Thai food in Padang-Padang and Sanur which have been open for about two years (wow lots of businesses…-ed) His favourite occupation is surf guide “I am a fisherman’s son and I love the beach so if I’m a surf guide I can pursue my hobby of surfing and make some money at the same time…hehehe”.

SURFING

Kina has been surfing since he was in primary school “after school I used to go straight to the beach to hide the bule’s  (who always surfed at Sanur) surfboard so my friends wouldn’t get it first, hehehe…” (naughty too hehe-ed). His parents didn’t want him to surf  because lots of surfers didn’t finish school, but Kina kept surfing anyway. Eventually, through surfing Kina went to Japan and starred in the film Bali Saikou (wow..a movie star too!! – ed) We asked who supported his surfing the most and he said “my older brother bli Sacang was the first one to teach me to surf and he taught me hard.” Kina idolizes Tom Curren and previously he quit surfing to concentrate on badminton. “Even if you have dark skin you can still play badminton, hehehe” but eventually the call of the ocean was too strong and he went back to surfing.

Comparing surfers from before and now Kina says, “before surfing was just a hobby, I was sponsored by Aloha and only got paid Rp.250,000, but now surfing is a job and they get paid millions”. Before we finished our chat Kina had a message for surfers and investors, “let’s all look after our environment together, especially the beach, so that sewage from hotels doesn’t contaminate the beach.”
