Wayan Yasa

When we interviewed Pak Yasa, MW got the impression of an enthusiastic and steadfast character who also was one of the founders of the BSA (Bali Surfing Association ). He gave us some of his time to share his impressions of surfing, the sport that still has a place in his heart to this day.

Pak Yasa’s  enthusiasm has grown since he was small. He was forced to leave school 3 months after he started because the school found out he wasn’t old enough to go to school. He mastered surfing when he was still in primary school. “Back then I would come home from school and then go to the beach to sell young coconuts. I would see the tourists surfing and I would wait until they were finished surfing in the hope that they would let me borrow their surfboards, hehehe….they did lend me their boards and they also taught me how to surf”, he remembered.

Surfing obsessed Pak Yasa. Actually it made him forget the way home. “Back then the beach boys never went home. We were always going on surf trips. Because of that lots of Semiyak surfers were forced to quit surfing because their parents were so angry with them. Eventaully it was just me and Wayan Ledang still surfing” said Pak Yasa.

About his role in the BSA, he has served as a BSA leader for three years beyond the term of office which is supposed to be 2 years old. "We have the same goal with the BSC, promoting surfing Indonesia, but after I finished my office was not know anymore how the current movement of BSA."

Pak Yasa has lots boards of all sizes and has surfed on  them all. Once he wasn’t surfing as much he sent most of his boards to Cimaja to help with the development of surfing there. “Now I hardly ever go surfing, the last time was in 2005 at Seminyak in front of Gado-gado” said Pak Yasa who is also a former head of the BSA.
Before we finished our chat Pak Yasa talked about his hopes for surfing in Indonesia. “I hope surfing in Indonesia keeps on going and respects local organizations. The surf industry must remember the organizations that helped it grow up in the first place. I also hope the BSA keeps on going and runs as it should”.
