Suryana into Quarterfinals over Wilson - Made Lana Takes Masters Division Win at Rip Curl West Sumbawa 2009

23 June 2009, Taliwang-West Sumbawa:  In the last heat of Round 4 today with 4-5 foot righthanders pounding onto the reef, the Number 1 and 2 ranked Coca-Cola ISC tour pro competitors battled it out for a spot in the Quarterfinals, and at the end of the 20 minute heat it was last year’s champion Dede Suryana who emerged the heat winner over 2007 champion Lee Wilson.

With 5 minutes to go Wilson needed only a 6.1 point score to take over the lead, and in these waves conditions it seemed very likely happen given Wilson’s penchant for going extremely mental at every opportunity, but things just didn't go his way so he was left paddling in clearly disappointed. “I was so nervous in the final minutes, coz I knew I had to get a good wave, so I was trying to make the most of the one I got, but I got off balance at the end of that floater and fell.  It just didn’t happen for me this time”, he explaied back on the beach

Wilson had jumped into the lead with a couple of short barrel rides, a rarity on high tide at this venue, but Suryana's patience was rewarded when he dropped into a couple of beauties which he carved apart to take over the lead, which he then held til the end, finishing with a 7.5 and a 4.5 to Wilson’s 6.0 and 5.0.

Suryana had come in equal third in the last Coca-Cola ISC event, giving Wilson the points lead for 2009, so he was extremely delighted to be sitting in the drivers seat again.  He said smiling, “I was bummed that I didn’t get to the final in the last comp at my home town, so I’m really happy that I’m in the quarters now so I can be in a position to win this one.  I really want to get the title again this year!”

After yesterday’s lay day for the surfers due to mediocre conditions where the previous rounds had been run, the Rip Curl Search crew meanwhile had been busy scoping out another location in which to hold Round 4.  Of course in this wave-rich region of West Sumbawa they were easily successful, so the word went out to the competitors at 6 pm yesterday to be ready to jump into the waiting transport at 5:30 am the next morning and head off for a one hour drive to a beautiful blue water bay that is home to some cranking and rippable righthanders.

The waves were going off and contrary to common knowledge many of the goofy footers found these waves to their liking, including last year’s Scar Reef Pro champion Rahtu Suargita and Rip Curl team rider Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya, who both dropped into the sizeable waves and threw heaps of spray, bashing the tops of each wave on their way to their heat wins.

Also advancing were Raditya Rondi, Made Awan, Pepen Hendrik, Devis Ratif, and Tai Graham, making it almost an even match between goofyfooters and naturalfooters who will compete in the upcoming Quarterfinals.

After the last heat of Round 4 the Masters Division competitors had their chance to show the youngsters how it should be done, and Made Lana in his first competition as a Master got off to a great start in the large hightide surf, posting two 7.5 point waves to claim victory over hard charging goofy footer Ketut Wirtawan, who was close on his heels at the horn with a 7.1 and a 6.8.  In third was Made Lapur, who together with Lana was surfing in the Pro division earlier but had been knocked out, and rounding out the top four was last Masters competition winner Wayan Widiarta.

The Quarterfinalists in the Pro division are scheduled to meet again on Friday the 23rd, as the swell is forecasted to be increasing starting Thursday afternoon, with Friday and Saturday scheduled to be giving some solid 6-8 surf in which to wrap up the Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009.

The Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro got started on June 20, the first day of the waiting period, and has until June 30 to be completed, allowing the competitors to surf in the best wave conditions and best locations possible in the wave rich and beautiful West Sumbawa area.

The Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro is supported by Rip Curl Asia, the Government of West Sumbawa, the West Sumbawa Tourism Forum, SurfTime, and Magic Wave, and is sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

Lay Day Today at Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009

22 June 2009, Taliwang-West Sumbawa:  The expected increase in swell did not materialize today, so after giving the Indian Ocean a few hours chance to wake up Contest Director Pete Matthews called a lay day for today at the beautiful and scenic Scar Reef beach.

There is currently a local volleyball tournament going on as well as a Battle of the Bands, so the contestants and crew have some entertainment to keep them occupied if they don’t have the urge to go boating, snorkeling, fishing, or just relaxing at the beach.

Yesterday afternoon saw the opening ceremony of the Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009, where the local government officials and community gathered for speeches and local dance/cultural performances before the Bupati (governor) rang to gong to open the festivities.

Competition is scheduled to continue tomorrow morning at a nearby righthand reef break for Round 4, so stay tuned and review the action of the last few days at www.ripcurl.com and www.isctour.com.  See you tomorrow!

Aerials and Big Turns Get Top Scores on Day 2 of Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009

21 June 2008, Taliwang-West Sumbawa:  Day 2 of the Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro saw the exciting action continue above the razor sharp coral reef of Scar Reef in West Sumbawa, with 4-5 foot waves on offer to tempt the Round 4 Coca-Cola ISC tour competitors into going big with a combination of aerials, big turns and massive floaters, and when pulling them off being rewarded by the top scores from the judging crew viewing the action from the Search boat in the channel.

First to break the 8.0 point barrier was Raditya Rondi in Heat 3, who first tested the waters with a small low scoring wave, then waiting behind the others before swinging into action and tearing apart a 4 foot set wave and get and 8.0, the top score of the event thus far.

As the morning progressed, the size of the set waves increased and with it the level of competition and point scores.  Mustofa Jeksen wowed the spectators and the judges with an insane 180 degree air reverse that got him an 8.0 score and the heat win to advance into Round 4, where he will be matched up with last years Rip Curl Scar Reef Pro winner Rahtu Suargita in man-on-man action.

Rip Curl team rider Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya dominated his Round 3 heat by crushing a sizeable set wave with his powerful frontside attack, getting the top single wave score of the day, an 8.5.  He advances to take on stylish natural footer Marlon Gerber in Round 4.

In the final heat of Round 3, 2007 ISC Champion Lee Wilson had his work cut out for him but was up to the task, aggressively searching for the critical section of the lip to smash and then speeding down the face to generate maximum speed to do it again and again, posting first a 5.0 and then capping it off with an 8.1 to claim the heat win.  Chasing him was the every dangerous Made Lapur, who also advanced taking second in the heat and his entry into Round 4.

The swell is forecast to increase slightly tomorrow, so the Round 4 competitors and the competition crew has been instructed to stand by for a mid morning call.

The Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro started on June 20, the first day of the waiting period, and has until June 30 to be completed, allowing the competitors to surf in the best wave conditions and best locations possible in the wave rich and beautiful West Sumbawa area.

Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009 Opens With First Day Action at Scar Reef

20 June 2009, Taliwang-West Sumbawa:  The Rip Curl West Sumbawa Pro 2009 rolled into action today at scenic Scar Reef in 3-4 foot waves, giving the opening round Coca-Cola ISC tour competitors their first go at challenging the world famous and aptly named razor-sharp reef break.

The third stop of the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour, this is the second year for Rip Curl to run this event in conjunction with the local government of West Sumbawa.  Last year’s event was named the Rip Curl Scar Reef Pro, however this year it was renamed in preparation for making it a mobile, taking advantage of the many excellent waves in the area including the right break of YoYo’s and the super hollow and critical wave of Supersuck when conditions allow.

The day’s action got started at 9 am on high tide, in preparation for the outgoing tide creating better tube-riding conditions.  Although it turned out that barrel rides were few and far between, the draining tide provided some tricky sections to challenge the competitors, and it became obvious who had done their homework in the few days leading up to the start of the event.

The standout surfer of the morning was unquestionably Rip Curl team rider Mega Semadhi, who had the rest of his competitors combo’d in the first 10 minutes of his 25 minute heat, taking to the air over the tricky sections to first post a 6.75 and then a 7.3, the highest single wave and the highest total points score of the day.  He was clearly on a mission to impress his sponsor, his teammates, and the rest of the field as well as to announce his intention to take home the Rp 20 million in prize money that awaits the winner in this 6 star prime ISC event.

Other surfers of mention were Tai Graham, who nabbed a nice little barrel that got him 7.0 points and a heat win, and Marlon Gerber, whose 6.75 was also in the high range of scores for the day, giving him a heat win and his ticket into Round 3.

With the first day of the waiting period already finished, there are 9 more days remaining in which to complete the event, giving Contest Director Pete Matthews the luxury of not only waiting for the ideal swell conditions but also the ideal choice of locations.  All indications point towards a Round 3 start at Scar Reef early morning tomorrow morning.

Round 3 will see all the top seeded ISC surfers competing with the today’s early round winners, so with the 6 star prime prize money and points up for grabs expect the competition to get very intense from here on out.

Plenty of girls and waves show up in force for the Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day presented by Clean and Clear

Double Six Beach, Bali, Indonesia – How do you put an end to a stubborn flat spell?
Gather a small army of eager women surfers on the beach and simply watch the waves roll in.

Nearly 100 women surfers showed up Sunday at Bali’s Double Six Beach for RipCurl’s sixth annual Girls Go Surfing Day,
and the waves followed suit. Clean, 3-to-4 foot lines from a building swell graced the beach all day,
bringing relief to local surfers after going five straight days without a swell and smiles to everyone
on hand for Girls Go Surfing Day.

Over the past 15 years, the global learn-to-surf program has helped hundreds of women develop the skills
and confidence to ride the waves, with events held in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Brazil, the United States
and Europe. This year’s event in Bali, sponsored by Clean & Clear,
more than accomplished its goal of “promoting the health and well-being of the female youth in Indonesia.”

Women surfers as young as eight and as old as 60 received top notch instruction from the certified instructors
at the Rip Curl School of Surf and took pointers from Rip Curl team riders, including Diah Rahayu (Seminyak),
Nyoman Satri (Kuta) and Alisa Mertens (Holland). RipCurl male team riders Garut Widiarta (Kuta), Mega Semadhi (Uluwatu),
Gobleg Suyadya (Uluwatu) and Pepen Hendrik (Kuta) also turned out to show their support and hang with the girls.

After riding her first wave this week as a student at the RipCurl School of Surf,
Jantine de Vroome, 32, vacationing in Bali from Amsterdam, was intent on participating in the festivities Sunday.

“They guaranteed I would stand up on the first day and I did,” Vroome said of her lessons with RipCurl.
“I’m headed to Spain in a couple of weeks and I definitely am going to continue surfing there. For me,
I don’t like just lying around on the beach, so surfing is perfect for me.”

The morning’s surfing clinics were followed by the main event: the women’s pro-am surf contest.
The field of 32, which included local Indonesian rippers and women surfers from as far away as Japan and
Australia was pared down to a thrilling final between the 4 riders Diah, Bone, Yesco and Stella.
By mid day the swell kicked securing great conditions for the showdown.
In the end Rip Curl teamrider Diah Rahayu (14) took the lead to finish first and
securing her first ever win of her still young surfing career.

“To have (an all-girl) contest and events like this is great,” RipCurl rider Diah said.
“It makes me practice and makes me a better surfer.
It shows the girls that we can be just as good as the boys – maybe better!”

RipCurl will look to continue to its commitment to promoting the sport of surfing among women with more contests
and clinics in the coming months.

“Our goal is to run an enjoyable and contemporary national program that will inspire
and positively influence future female surfers of today,” Rip Curl event manager Dhanny said.
